Skiff Development Coach Position

Sail Nova Scotia in partnership with the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron and the Canadian Sport
Centre Atlantic is hiring a Skiff Development Coach who will be responsible for the Skiff Intro program based out of the RNSYS in Halifax and the Emerging Next Generation Skiff program.

The Skiff Development Coach will play a very important role in executing the Sail Nova Scotia High performance program which has a goal to be a national leader consistently developing world class athletes and coaches through coach driven, athlete-centred programs.

Job Description:
The Skiff Development Coach will be responsible for identifying and assessing talent at both the club and regional levels. The successful candidate will develop and execute a Skiff program aimed at creating success at the 29er Worlds and FX Junior Worlds level. A successful program will graduate athletes onto the Canadian Sailing Team with the potential for international senior-fleet success.

The successful candidate will also play a significant role with the Nova Scotia Sailing Team program including liaison with the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic regarding the fitness program, dryland program, Yearly Training Plans and working with club race team coaches.

The coach must have the skill to assess athlete talent, design YTPs to address talent gaps and provide daily monitoring and feedback to athletes.

The position will report to the Executive Director of Sail Nova Scotia for performance against the strategic goals as developed by the Sail Nova Scotia High Performance Committee and will report to the RNSYS Head Race Coach for all day to day operations and logistics. This position will work collaboratively within the RNSYS Race Team program.

The Skiff Development Coach will be expected to:
 Design a program to meet the Sail NS High Performance Committee’s performance targets and Key Performance Outcomes.
 Build an Intro to skiff program to be run at RNSYS and coach 29er athletes enrolled in the RNSYS Race Team program
 Provide some on-water support at training and regattas for Emerging Next Gen skiff athletes.
 Work with Club coaches across the province to identify athletes that are interested in the 29er
 Sit on the Sail Nova Scotia High Performance Committee in an ex-officio role
 Submit bi-annual reports to the Sail NS High Performance Committee outlining successes, challenges and issues
 Assist with a Sail NS Coach Mentorship program
 Provide information on provincial development athletes to the RNSYS Head Race Coach, Sail NS Technical Director, and National Skiff Coach.
 Manage the IST Support for all qualifying levels of athletes
 Manage the Sail Nova Scotia’s Prospects Training groups

 Have sailing/coaching experience with skiff and double-handed athletes, as well as club level development teams. Experience coaching athletes at levels from the introductory level through high performance level is considered an asset.
 Have experience with Athlete Talent Identification.
 Experience fostering the early development of sailing programs will be considered an asset
 Have excellent communication and motivational skills.
 Proven experience in developing positive stakeholder relationships.
 Have excellent organizational and time management skills
 Minimum NCCP CANSail 5-6 Coach certification. Competition Development certification (Level 3) considered an asset.

Sail Nova Scotia is the provincial sport governing body for the sport of sailing and represents 30 clubs and more than 2500 sailors.
