Summer 2020: CanSail Level 3 & 4 Instructors: Pender Island

Pender Island Junior Sailing Association (PIJSA) is looking for an instructor(s) qualified to provide coaching for CanSail Levels 3 & 4 on Pender Island.  The courses are for 5 days, 9 am – 3.30 pm for the following 4 weeks: July 13th-17th, and July 27th-31st. The Level 3/4 course uses Laser 1s and 2s and bytes.  The classes take place at Hamilton Beach, Browning Harbour.  Another instructor shall be providing Levels 1 & 2 courses on the same weeks using Pirate-class boats.

The Instructor must be able to organize and deliver the Level 3 & 4 courses; there is no senior instructor.  Usually there are a minimum of 5 directors or volunteers available to help with non-instructional matters each day.  The Level 3 & 4 courses shall have a combined maximum of 10 students, most of whom are returning students familiar with the school’s operations.  The Instructor reports generally to the Commodore (Bruce Waygood) and specifically to the “director-in-charge” for the week.

PIJSA, which has been giving courses since 1993, with instructors coming from the Victoria area or Vancouver.  The following options have been used to enable instructors to come to Pender Island.  Usually, instructors stay on island for the week, often being housed by one of PIJSA’s Directors. Some instructors in the past have camped at the camp ground adjacent to our site at Hamilton Beach.  Some instructors have commuted daily from Swartz Bay; arrive at the beach at 9.30 am; leave the beach at 2.55 pm. When instructors commute from Swartz Bay, volunteers will supervise the deployment and stowing of boats in order to accommodate ferry sailings.

Travel assistance for ferry passenger fares will be available. The salary in 2020 will be $770/week.

PIJSA, while preferring applicants who can instruct for the 2 weeks, will consider applications for each week.
