The Vic-Maui International Yacht Race and the Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race require some crew members on each boat to hold World Sailing Approved training certificates. Typically, this will be an Offshore Personal Survival Course.
The Southern Straits Yacht Race, Swiftsure International Yacht Race, Patos Island Race, and Cascadian Convoy require or recommend personal survival training for some crew members on each boat, such as either a Coastal Personal Survival Course or an Offshore Personal Survival Course. Coastal events typically accept, but usually do not require, World Sailing Approved training certificates.

Most offshore or oceanic events that are sailed under the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations categories 0-1-2 require some or all crew members on each boat to hold current certificates from a World Sailing Approved training course. Typically, this will be an Offshore Personal Survival Course. Typical offshore and oceanic events outside British Columbia include Transpac, Pacific Cup, Newport to Bermuda, Sydney Hobart, Fastnet, and the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC).

Sailors should review the event Notice of Race or rules for training requirements or recommendations, well in advance. The event rules should indicate the applicable category of the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations (or national equivalent), any applicable national authority prescriptions, and any event-specific modifications to the training requirements.
BC Sailing’s Safety at Sea program offers personal survival training for racers and cruisers who are participating in coastal and offshore events and passages. Courses are delivered by Sail Canada accredited instructors in conjunction with local clubs and facilities. We use a mix of classroom, hands-on practical, indoor-outdoor, and in-the-water practical sessions.
Our mission is to enable sailors to prevent or mitigate emergencies and save lives.
The most current information on the Safety at Sea program, including course dates and registration, is always available on the website at BC Sailing Safety at Sea.
