Course Details

The Sail Canada Learn to Power (LTP) program providers boaters with knowledge to safely operate a motor vessel on the water.

Sail Canada Learn-to-Power Standards

Introduction to Boating – Introduces novice boaters to safe practices when preparing to leave the dock, while underway and when returning to dock. This standard may be taught in a sailing vessel or a powerboat. It is expected that the vessel will be less than 12 metres in length.


Basic Outboard Standard – Learn to operate safely, as skipper, a craft of up to six metres powered by an outboard engine under 55 kW (75 hp) in familiar waters.


Basic Powerboat Standard – Learn to operate safely, as skipper, a craft longer than six metres powered by an engine over 55 kW (10 hp) in local waters.


Basic Powerboat (Commercial Endorsement) – Same objectives as the basic standard plus conduct for commercial vessels. To be taught on vessels under 12 tonnes, up to 40 feet LOA.


Intermediate Powerboat Standard – Learn to operate safely, as skipper, a powerboat between nine to 12 metres in length with inboard engine(s) by day in moderate wind and sea conditions.
