Training Renewals and Upgrades (OPSC)

Sail Canada approved Personal Survival Training has been offered in BC since 2011.

Certificates are valid for five years from the class date.

We do not offer specialized courses specifically for periodic renewals or to bridge/upgrade from one course to another course.

Over time, participant memory and experience changes. Best practices evolve, practical drills develop, and refined or new content and learnings are incorporated in the course. Knowledge and skills need to be refreshed and practiced frequently to be useful when needed most. People whose training was several years ago, and/or whose training certificates have expired or are expiring, should consider taking the complete course again.

Participants who have previously completed a Safety at Sea Seminar, Coastal Personal Survival Course, or Offshore Personal Survival Course, with a certificate issued by BC Sailing, are eligible for a training renewal/upgrade discount option (~10%). You must have your expired/expiring BC Sailing certificate number ready when registering, as you will need it to select the renewal/upgrade option.

BACKGROUND

BC Sailing’s Safety at Sea program offers personal survival training for racers and cruisers who are participating in coastal and offshore events and passages. Courses are delivered by Sail Canada accredited instructors in conjunction with local clubs and facilities. We use a mix of classroom, hands-on practical, indoor-outdoor, and in-the-water practical sessions.

Our mission is to enable sailors to prevent or mitigate emergencies and save lives.

The most current information on the Safety at Sea program, including course dates and registration, is always available on the website at BC Sailing Safety at Sea
