Victory for Andrew McCorquodale at 2021 52 SUPER SERIES & Rolex TP52 World Championship

Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s Andrew McCorquodale sails to victory, winning both the 2021 52 SUPER SERIES and Rolex TP52 World Championship.

Winning by the slimmest of margins; Takashi Okura’s TP52 Sled team were crowned champions at the 2021’s 52 SUPER SERIES and Rolex TP52 World Championship in Palma, Mallorca. Andrew McCorquodale says that they had a “rollercoaster” event.  Holding a lead of one point on both championships scoreboards, the team which won two of this season’s three regattas; had a nervous wait ashore during the final race day until scheduled racing had to be cancelled because of gale force Mistral winds on the Bay of Palma.

Sled have been on the 52 SUPER SERIES since joining in January 2014 and finished on regatta podiums eight times. Andrew notes that the team capitalized on the successes of their 2019 season with Sled coming back after the pandemic hiatus with progressive and consistent performance.

We asked Andrew if he had any advice for young sailors looking to make the jump from dinghy sailing to international yacht racing.

Andrew said “The first thing you need to do is to sail as much as possible on as many different boats as possible. The second piece of advice I have; is to get a skill. Whether that be rigging, boat building or sail making. My background in rigging has gotten me work more times than I can count. A skill takes you to that next level of expertise.”

“I want to thank my wife for her unwavering support. I also want to thank Ross McDonald and Richard Clarke for their support and guidance, especially during my early years.” – Andrew McCorquodale
